old men singing sad songs
handwritten playlist featuring Susumu Yokota, SFV Acid, NewDad, Grizzly Bears ++
about five years ago, I spent good days and longer nights working as a manager/curator at a favourite bar in my city, befriending regular customers. one such regular would walk in with his typewriter and place himself next to crowded seats. the typewriter often piqued the interest of bystanders, who would ask him what he was typing, and in under two minutes of talking to them, he would write them a small poem. he never failed to hit the soft spot with his words. he’s written me a few on rare occasions if you are wondering how I know. at the end of our last interaction, he left a note with me before leaving, words written in red stare back at me, names of ten songs with the list titled “old men singing sad songs”.
I know they say don’t judge a book (in this case music) by its cover but would you please look at these album covers. I was already sold before I hit play.
Keel by Susumu Yokota
fun, inviting, suspenseful, and percussions that cut. this is a big old satisfier, a Japanese cult favourite.
Wondering Dub by Maral
love a wubby-duby tune that sounds carefree, like made on a whim. the tempo is just right.
Brace Yourself Jason by U-Ziq
since recently this feels a lot personal than it used to. even bigger earworm when the heart is in a murk. bringing this ‘97 gem back.
Moonlight Rendezvous by The Other People Place
sorry had to. classic for years gone and years to come, no need to say more.
Sip It by SFV Acid
still remember hearing this for the first time many years ago. the person who shared this with me got married last week—anyway, found it again recently, and it’s as fresh as ever.
Gun Shy by Grizzly Bear
a soft song I have played on repeat for years. has me winding down memory lane hard and fast.
Blue by NewDad
can somebody tell me why I am in love with this Irish band. I cannot seem to stop myself from playing this on repeat.
song for fear by bodies of divine infinite and eternal spirit
if you are looking for music that makes you feel like a main character in a movie (sorry i’m always looking for these). guitar music only.
Jaguar Unseen by Roy Montgomery
a very special artist who never fails to put me in a melancholic trance. mhm a meme that read “thinking cap stays on during sex” comes to mind. *giggles sheepishly*
I Was Once Here by Angad Berar, Debjit Banerjee
I would use this cheeky little guy to bid farewell to a lover I will never see again. mellow, beauty, emo, tune.
here for the artist freaks and my fellow degenerates.
a big fat drip of MORPHINE. (above link takes you to the compiled list, all images link to the trax as well. enjoy)
